This is the nub of the matter: a patent is useful only when put to use, so an idea minus a plan is not worth investment. It is essential that, prior to approaching a patent attorney, the private inventor develops not only the basic idea but also a commercial business plan by which it will be developed fully and exploited commercially. Once you have your business plan in place, that is the time to approach a patent attorney to act on your behalf in Ireland, Europe and other countries abroad.

A word of warning to all inventors: do not, under any circumstances, disclose your invention, technology or idea to anyone until you have filed the patent application that will protect it. Remember, the path to the summit is scattered with the fallen – and we have seen many felled by their own disclosures. The rule is: always couple your R&D with the QT!
