Donal is Cruickshank's Senior Partner and plays a central role in the company, bringing to his work thirty years’ experience and a wealth of expertise. Donal joined the IP profession from industry, where he was employed as an engineer in what is now one of the largest manufacturing Irish multinationals, CRH. He has considerable expertise in mechanical, process and manufacturing engineering, with experience in a range of other fields as well, notably electronics and software, nanotechnology and cryptology. Donal is a European Patent Attorney, an Irish Patent Attorney and a European Trade Mark Attorney. He holds a unique qualification as a patent attorney: as well as being technically qualified, he holds an MBA and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. A former President of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) UK, he has also served as Secretary and as Ireland Officer of LES International. He has also served as President of the Association of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys in Ireland. At present, Donal is the Irish delegate to Fédération Internationale des Conseils en Propriété Industrielle (FICPI) and is also the ministerial appointment to the Irish Patents Office users’ council.
Over his many years in the profession, Donal has presented numerous lectures to universities, Technical Institutes, industry groups and public service organisations on the commercial features of Intellectual Property. He is a keen supporter of enterprise and innovation and regularly gives his time free of charge to start-ups and budding entrepreneurs. In his time away from the office, Donal is a competitive sailor and pursues his interest in rugby, gardening and history.
